Frequently Asked Questions

How will psychotherapy help me?

Psychotherapy offers several benefits to individuals struggling with emotional, behavioural, or psychological difficulties. With the use of evidenced based strategies and psychological theories, a psychotherapist/social worker can help you to facilitate self-knowledge, develop coping skills, and provide you with the resources to achieve optimal self-development. Overall, psychotherapy can help improve your mental health and overall well-being and your therapist will work with you to determine which modalities will result in the best outcome for you.

Are you accepting new clients?

Yes, we are currently accepting new clients. Please contact the office to complete a consultation and schedule your first session.

What should I expect during my first session?

During your first session your clinician will review the practices policies, such as the consent and confidentiality agreements. Your clinician will then go through your history with you and discuss the reasons for you seeking therapy. This session is focused on building rapport between you and your clinician and discovering your expectations for therapy, as well as the clinicians approach to therapy in order for you to gain a greater understanding of how your sessions will progress.

How long do sessions last?

Sessions are on average 50 minutes in duration. Though 30 minute sessions are also available.

What is the cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel or reschedule your therapy session, we kindly request that you provide us with at least 24 hours notice. This will allow us to offer the time slot to another client who may be in need of therapy services. In the event of a cancellation within the 24-hour window or if you fail to show up for your scheduled appointment without prior notice, you will be responsible for paying the full session fee. However, we do understand that emergencies and unforeseen situations can occur, and we do our best to be accommodating to these circumstances.

Do you accept insurance?

Registered psychotherapists and registered social workers are accepted by many insurance providers. However, please verify with your insurance provider to confirm your coverage prior to your first session. Our practice does not bill directly to insurance providers. We will provide you with your receipt that includes all the necessary information to submit to your insurance providers to receive your reimbursement.

Northern Skies Wellness also accepts clients through the Victim Quick Response Program (VQRP+), Canada Life, Glencore, and the Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Counselling Program. We also accept clients through the Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) Program for clients with Indigenous Status. If you qualify for these programs the 3rd party program will be billed for the cost of your services.

Do registered psychotherapists and registered social workers do the same thing?

In the realm of private practice, registered psychotherapists and registered social workers are one in the same. Although they obtain different degrees, they are both trained to provide psychotherapy services. Both professions incorporate evidence based strategies into their approach, and tailor their psychological modalities to best meet the needs of each individual client. Please refer to our Helpful Resources section to learn more about the differences between different mental health professionals.
