You may have started to see me around the office by now, as I have been hanging around for the last few weeks. My name is Hailey Schroeder, and I am a Master’s student at Yorkville University currently performing my practicum placement at Northern Skies Wellness, where I am considered a student clinician.
Practicum placement is a requirement for graduation from Yorkville’s Master’s program. It is a hands-on learning experience that involves the supervised application of all the material taught within the program in a real work environment. During that time, I will sit in on sessions with other clinicians of the establishment, learn administrative tasks like scheduling and billing, perform consultations, and counsel clients.
A practicum is a valuable opportunity for students to learn the real-world application of their counselling skills and experience the clinic's function while sharing the experience of various clinicians. Practicum is a valuable opportunity for students in their learning but also beneficial for clients. Under clinical supervision, students are invited to establish their own clients for a discounted rate. Sessions can include the direct and present supervision of a supervisor or indirect supervision of a client's treatment plans, ensuring high-quality care with a fresh perspective. Booking with a student clinician can be easier due to them having more availability.
When choosing to work with a student clinician, their education and training are up-to-date and they can further their training to meet your needs or circumstances. My practicum experience is a time to shape myself into what kind of clinician I want to be and having clients that want to partake in that experience would help us grow together.
As I am a student clinician, when it comes to insurance coverage there is a potential for a lack of coverage on student clinicians so please check your insurance policies before attempting to schedule a session. If you are comfortable having me sit in on your sessions, let your clinician or our administrator know!
